Anybody got an idea how I could grab phone numbers off the internet.
As an example, say the address was Mooney Aircraft, 123 main st, Kerrville, tx 78028 I have that in the data, but no phone number, and as you can see, they want phone numbers. I will probably do this in VFP as I found a way today to connect VFP to mysql remotely Sent: Wednesday, January 28, 2015 9:39 PM To: Virgil Bierschwale Subject: Re: H-1B Displacement Maps now show info windows Looking good. But, as a reporter, if I'm going to write about the information on the map, I need a contact point and a job title. That way, I can easily call the prospective employer's clerk and say, "Jack, I see from your LCA that you wanted to hire a H1B teacher last June. Why not an American?" I can't easily make a video or write an article based solely on web info -- I need a voice, a face, an address, a visual building, etc., because that allows me to create an intellectual & visual identity for the company (you'd say the u'd guy) in an outsourcing story. The phone number and title also are also needed to reassure me that the map is good, because you're demonstrating to me at every dot that you can back up the data with a telephone number. You should also provide an obvious link to the relevant Excel database in the map, for extra reassurance, so I can play with the data to find interesting LCAs to focus on. I noticed one healthcare job in San Diego where the pay was apparently $!4,500 a year. Eventually, it would be good to pair each map with a link to the BLS site where the gov't describes the average salary and future job growth for each job title. I did one calculation and came up with an estimate that H1Bs were sucking up 40 percent of predicted job growth for statisticians. How many years are you showing on the maps? Six would be nice, but that will take much more of your time. FWIW, I'd guess the resident population of H1B is about 650,000, assuming some leave early and some stay longer than six years. Also, the number may be growing because there's no cap on H1B hiring by non-profits, such as universities and hospitals. In terms of colors, green/yellow/red would be good, because it easily shows how many jobs/visas/LCAs were successfully outsourced, delayed/abandoned and temporarily blocked. That way, we can show your maps online and the readers/viewers will instantly understand what you're showing. Eventually, eventually, it would be nice to be able to do database-wide searches, i.e. all Goldman Sachs visa requests, or all requests for jobs paying less than $30k. What this means to you is you can click on any map icon on any of these maps and a window will pop up showing you the who, what, where, why and when as well as how much they will get paid. Only remaining thing to add is a way to show “stacked” markers. As an example, even though a map may only show one marker in Austin, tx, there might actually be 3,500 of them stacked one on top of the other as all I had to work with was the city and state. Bottom line, even though the maps look really bad for Americans in America, things actually are worse than the maps portray.
