Well, that could be a problem. I've got legacy Linux servers deployed
at client sites with older Samba servers, working fine for years.
Looks like I'll have to look at upgrade options.
The Windows Update is free, but the cost to support it, maybe not so much.
SAMBA 4 emulates Active Directory, though I don't know how well.
I was able to get ClearOS (built on CentOS specifically to be a
domain controller, using SAMBA 3) for free as in beer. ClearOS offers
a SAMBA 4 AD option, but it's not free, and it requires an ongoing
subscription.
Possibly a real Linux wiz could roll their own implementation that
could be relatively easily managed by a non-wiz network admin. That's
beyond my abilities at the moment, and is likely to remain so because
I have very little time to spend learning new stuff, unfortunately.
I will wait as long as I can to see if MS puts those registry hacks
back in. As of today I can still get machines with Win 7 Ultimate SP1 32 bit.
If the NT domain is truly dead and unresurrectable, I will probably
go with ClearOS SAMBA 4. TCO for a Linux domain, even with a
subscription, is likely to still be cheaper than that for a Windows
Server environment.
