Windows 10 is a free upgrade from Windows 7/8 for a year. Meaning that
you can obtain the upgrade without paying for it, for a year. If you do
that, it's just a normal upgrade, it doesn't expire or anything.

If you want to upgrade after that time-frame, you have to buy a copy.

This is aimed really at getting home users upgraded. Most of the
corporate world is still on Windows 7 and do not upgrade at the drop of
a hat. By the time those guys get round to it, they'll be paying for it.

Also Microsoft seems to be moving more towards a services model for all
of its cash cows, being Office, Windows and the gaming platform.  So
presumably they think they can work that way instead.
