While you can wrap your code to grab the return value and type-test it, you shouldn't have to. Check to make sure no one's created a CHRSAW() function in your local codebase that's fouling it up, though it shouldn't, and check to ensure you're running the right/matching runtimes, because sometimes this makes functions do wacky things. My recommendation is to take a day off and eat turkey. Maybe it will clear up by Black Friday.
