I've been a happy CrashPlan user. Free if you want to back up to
another CrashPlan user. Paid version backs up to their cloud service.
Cross platform. Backup reports tells me when my sons computer hasn't
been backed up while he's at college.

I am trying to install some backup software for a friend. The app I have
used in the past is SyncToy which is very good at mirroring folders to a
backup location however for some reason it won't install on his machine. It
demands Net Framework version 2.61 (I think) but his PC has Net Framework
version 4. I've heard that SyncToy can be a bit temperamental :-) My
question is - can anyone recommend something as easy to use as SyncToy for
someone who is a novice? I've looked at EaseUS ToDo but that stores the
backup files as compressed files rather than in their native format like
SyncToy.
Thanks
