Actually, many people have converted their diesels to run on WVO (eg waste Vegetable Oil), but I don't think that would be a substitute for a real industrial biodiesel production and distribution system to help reduce US dependence of foreign oil. Being able to use WVO in your vehicle would be great, if some emergency disrupted the US petrol inventory and petrol was not available, though.
