"Didn't work" covers a lot of ground. Couldn't find files, got an
error, new app showed no mail, can't log in, turned my machine purple,
etc.

is pretty much the authoritative reference, but it's 4 years old and
probably out of date, while

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/thunderbird/install-migrate-and-update

is pretty much the support site.

I haven't tried this, but would be glad to help you guess what's happening...
