That sounds a lot like a family tech support call I got earlier this
week. In this case, AVG was promoting its premium version (free had
been installed) and lots of links were missing from the desktop and
the Win10 tile-thingie interface (do we still call it Metro? Modern?
That stupid tile thing?). Much panic ensued, but it appears nothing
was actually deleted.

Automated updates. What could possibly go wrong?

What a dumb idea.
