Went to an office yesterday to install a new app.  Needed a spare socket 
outlet for external HDD - only single wall socket available into which 
is plugged UPS (into which is plugged monitor, UPS and something else - 
didn't bother checking what it was).

Sourced 4-way extension outlet (OK I'll unplug the UPS, plug in the 
extension strip, plug the UPS into extension strip and have three 
spare.unused outlets).

OK let's do it.  Unplug UPS - computer dies immediately.  Oh dear - 
what's going on here ?

Check behind UPS (which of course I should have done anyway) and what do 
we find ?  Computer plugged into surge-protect outlet of UPS instead of 
into  battery-protected outlet of UPS. 

Of course, they claimed, it must have been done that way by the previous 
"IT specialist" who came to visit ...
