Its not that I don't trust their backups.

Its just that I've learned the hard way.
When (IF) a company goes out of business, you will have no warning and if
your backups are only at their location, well that’s probably not going to
be a good scenario.

Usually your provider will have a backup scheduling, covering your html/php
docs etc directory and the database you're using. Perhaps their scheduling
will be not good enough for you. In the case of MySQL, you usually can use
mysqldump or another client to backup your database to your local hard-drive
whenever you wish.
