For UPS question, I only use it for the main machine and it's monitor, with surge suppressors on everything else. We don't get too many bad lightning storms here on Long Island, but when I lived along the Hudson and Delaware Rivers we had some really big ones that sometimes had me concerned enough to pull plugs and ride out.
