Years ago, when it was called Essentials - the anti-virus SW by M$ - the
question was raised here. It may have been me that asked it. But, the
idea was that - since M$ makes the OS - then, in Theory - they are also
the best ones to be able to Protect that OS from attacks. But, now
you're saying just the opposite. However, I see what you mean. If there
are flaws in the OS - and protection SW is based upon parts of the OS -
then there will be flaws in the virus or malware protection.
However, even third party SW can have flaws in its SW! Right?
And - since this thread is bringing up issues w/Malware protection - and
I had started another thread about malware - maybe its a good time to
ask. What DO People use to protect against Malware? And, is MalWareBytes
the best protection against MalWare??

Meanwhile, other links say this is an issue with the Windows "Malware
Protection Engine"--Windows Defender.
The reason why Windows Defender isn't good enough is because it is
manufactured by the same company that makes the OSes that it's
supposed to protect. It is likely dependent on code in those OSes, and
if there are flaws in that code, then there will be flaws in Windows
Defender.
That is the explanation I give people when I am asked if they should
rely on Windows Defender instead of using third-party malware protection.
Now I have actual data to back me up.
