This guy was featured on the Oprah show yesterday.
The producers wanted to see whether giving money to
the homeless is a good strategy for ending
homelessness.

So they followed a few homeless guys around, and found
a guy who didn't have a severe mental problem and
didn't have a drug problem, and gave him 100,000 to do
with what he wished. They also provided him a
homeless financial advocate who gave him some
financial advice, which he refused to follow.

Within a few months he had blown through all the money
and was homeless again. He bought a 35,000 truck, he
bought cars for several other people, and got several
credit cards. He was given several job offers which
he refused.

He is now living under the same bridge that he was
when they found him and is actually now in debt
because he ran up his credit cards.

Moral of the story: you can't solve the homeless
problem with money or jobs. The best you can do is
provide them shelter and food and psychiatric care and
basically warehouse them.
