You boot from a linux recovery disk and do some sort of binary copy of  the
reiser partition and recover from the copy -
but since the recovery os is on cd rom, and the reiser partition had
*filled* the main hard drive ...

I'm toying with the idea of a usb disk - but linux is a bit iffy about usb
devices...   ...

I know the answer to this one.  Reiser cannot be repaired if it is
mounted.  So if your root volume is Reiser you need to boot from a
different device.

No idea how you do this of course :-)
