I usually start from the following "formula":

SI+P-S+/-R+/-A= FI

SI: starting inventory (can be the result of a physical count)
P: purchases
S: sales
R: returns to vendors or from customers
A: plus / minus adjustments due to theft, losses, breakage, owner
withdrawals, internal use or whatever
FI: Final inventory (or stock on hand at any one time)

At each stage, companies usually have internal procedures which are the
kernel of the business rules concerning inventories. These rules always
include forms, internal document flow, responsibilities (ie: who authorizes
customer returns, who authorizes inventory adjustments, etc, etc)

The VFP app is then built around these rules and all controls have to comply
with this internal system.

I hope this helps
