Colossal Cave Adventure was written in DECSYSTEMS-20 FORTRAN IV. [1]
In comparison, using VFP is not a bad choice.

It's stable, relatively bug free, speedy and is a typical BASIC-clone
that most coders can grok. And likely to run as long as Win32
emulation is available.
