Whil, You only need TCP/IP to run the network. If XP version is Home then it may take some time to resolve all the network names and this can be anything from 1 minute to a couple of hours. XP Pro still takes a while but you sometimes have to kick it into action by browsing ALL the computers near me before it resolves the network names from the IP addresses.
Normally Start/Run \\<<IP_ADDRESS>> does the trick where the IP address is the server you want to find. You may well have the Netbios protocol (Microsoft Networking) set as the default protocol on the Win2K machine and ideally you shouldn't mix protocol stacks together so I would suggest only using TCP/IP on all the workstations. That way the network names will get resolved quicker. Also check that the 2K machines are not looking for "Wins" names resolution. I've got a box with XP and Fedora Core residing happily next to each other in a dual boot scenario (it's really quite easy, once you learn The Magic Trick). I'll have a writeup on all of the detailed steps (just for you, Virgil!) ready next week. So nows I wants to access the file server with this XP install. Trouble is, XP doesn't see anything on the network at all. Network Neighborhood only shows the name of the domain (on the NT4 server.) No nodes underneath. However, I've got a Win2K on the same network and it can browse any and everything on the network nice as can be. Logins on both the W2K and XP boxes are the same. Either.... (1) Both W2K and XP use a network access setting but it's set up OK in W2K but not in XP, or (2) The way you connect to the network (active dir?) in XP is different than in W2K. History leading up to this... This network had originally been an NT4 file server based network. Then I migrated the file serving tasks to a Linux box and use Samba to connect from W2K. I was expecting to add this XP box to the network and have it 'magically' see the file server as well, but no go. The only thing that I can see that is different is in the Local Area Network Connection properties. On W2K, I've got all of the protocols enabled, whereas on XP, I've only got TCP/IP enabled. Do I need to have "Client for MSFT Networks" or "File and Print Sharing for MSFT Networks" enabled?
