There are a lot of differences between the service branches. When I was in the USAF, I had volunteered to go to SEA (Vietnam, Thailand, Laos) to get it out of the way. I did not want the possibility of being shipped there hanging over me. That is when I found out that as a newbie, I was not allowed to go over there; it was reserved for senior personnel. Why? Except for pilots and certain other aircrew members (which I was not), SEA was a vacation. You were hundreds of miles from action. You cycled the aircraft once a day and while they were out bombing and strafing, you were pretty much free to do almost anything. OTOH, the Army sent you over while the shine on your shoes was still drying and you had a combat life expectancy of 14 seconds. Next! It would not surprise me if this continues today. This is going to happen in almost any large organization with significant momentum.
