First of all, the architectures are different. It's more difficult to exploit a weakness in OOo because of the way it's built. Word (and Office) was designed from the ground up to be promiscuous back before there were viruses, and MSFT has had too much of an investment to change that architecture. Second, it might. Name one. <s> I'm being pragmatic here. Just as if you're a frequent traveler, you learn which flights to avoid because they have a history of being late, and you're more likely to be delayed on those flights. That doesn't mean that the flight you DO choose won't be late; just that the chances are less. Same here. No guarantee that OOo won't be affected, but.... given that there hasn't EVER been even a minor virus spread by an OOo exploit, that's the flight I'm taking. > Right now microsoft is targeted because they're the biggest kid on the > block, but we all know how people (companies, hackers, etc.) like to target > the king of the mountain. > Who's to say that if microsoft wasn’t around, it wouldn’t be the companies > that ya'll like that wouldn’t be accused of all these problems ? Being accused and being guilty are two different things. Yes, if OOo had an 80% market share, I'm sure it would be a more tempting target. I'd still feel more comfortable with it, though. IIS and Apache have roughly similar market shares. But IIS has been the source of numerous security problems over the years. Name one major outbreak that's been the result of an Apache flaw. The Open Source model - many eyes, shallow bugs - just works better than where the code is hidden and security by obscurity is the preferred practice.
