Yep, the IRS has the 1096 & 1099 forms online to download, but warn they
can't be used to actually file them. In fact, there is a fine for folks who
do use the downloaded forms to file with. So a handful of vendors have IRS
approved forms that are of the correct size and layout that allow for rapid
scanning at the IRS. The forms are 8.5" x 11.0", but there is a 1/2" wide
tear-off strip along the vertical edge of the form a person must rip off
before sending their printed forms in, lest they get fined for not complying
with that as well. The 20 pack of 5 part 1099 & 3 1096 forms cost me
$25.00(!)., of which I only needed 2 of the 1099 sheets per copy # of 1099s,
and 2 of the 1096 forms. If I fail to file the necessary forms accurately,
and in a timely manner, I can be fined for not correctly reporting the folks
I paid more than $600.00 in fees to during a given tax year, and the
deduction for hiring said services can be declined (along with interest and
penalties of course).

It is absolutely amazing to me how much even I, a one man band, must go
through to comply with the various state and federal tax laws. All I want
to do is make a decent living for myself, and provide some income to those
vendors and service providers that help me bring value to my clients.
Between the time drain, CPA fees and other miscellaneous costs the actual
amount I end up absorbing is about 30% more than what I have actually paid
out to these fine folks. But, at least the CPA and pre-printed forms fees
are tax deductible. The loss of time is not, however <g>... The cost of
doing business in America, eh?
