I want us out of there as much as you do, but I believe passions are
stirred and wills are steeled, way beyond the climate that produced the
9/11 attack. If we had 10 thousand enemies then, we have a million now.
Sure, I'm making these numbers up, but the point is that we have a whole
lot more enemies today then we did before.

What I'm saying is that we need now to prove to the world (and
ourselves!) that we aren't malevolent invaders/occupiers/conquerors, but
that America really does stand for all the good things we ourselves want
to believe is true.

Excuse me for drifting here, but I think this needs to be said
somewhere: I see our gov't - from the top down - as having been seized
by arrogant, belligerent, greedy, selfish, authoritarian types, the
likes of which I never thought could possibly happen here. One great
example: I look around and I just don't see a system that honors justice
for all, instead what I see are people who can afford lawyers getting
away with whatever - while the rest get bagged, tagged and steamrolled.
We have 2 million people in jail today, and probably 10 or 20 times that
number on 'programs'. Is this what justice looks like? I'm talking about
an attitude that doesn't match my belief system, that has affected our
world in big and small ways, and I reject it.

I agree! But, still, that house is burning now, and we've got to come up
with a way to put it out in such a way that we don't wind up with a
million people on a mission to hurt us. I know, the Vietnamese didn't
come back at us, but this enemy is different in some significant ways.
