Aside from the fact that there is no such thing as numeric(3), but rather 
numeric (3,0), the time and effor that you have spent even thinking about this 
will not be recovered unless your program is run 13 trillion times an hour for 
137 trillion hours over the next month.

Whenever I have such anomalous doubts, I always choose bifurcatied 
split-infinitive mantissa encoding.  Nevertheless, even this approach is 
uncharacteristic.
