Sorry, but have to say that diesels do NOT require a new battery every year.
Yes the battery is a larger capacity, this is because it has to preheat the glowplugs before pumping fuel etc. My company like most in the UK (since tax rules for Company cars changed) is all diesel and out of curiosity I've checked the service record sheets and we haven't needed to replace a battery on any of our cars during their 3 year hire period.
