Sorry, but have to say that diesels do NOT require a new battery every year. 

Yes the battery is a larger capacity, this is because it has to preheat the 
glowplugs before pumping fuel etc.

My company like most in the UK (since tax rules for Company cars changed) is 
all diesel and out of curiosity I've checked the service record sheets and we 
haven't needed to replace a battery on any of our cars during their 3 year hire 
period.

Current fleet is: 4  x Saab 9.3, 1 Honda Accord, 1 Audi A4, 2 Mercedes C Class, 
a Mercedes B class and my wifes Renault Scenic, all diesel

We did however need to replace batteries on a Golf V6 (petrol) at 62,000 miles 
and a Lexus IS200 (petrol) at 84,000 miles and a 7.5 tonne lorry that had just 
under 500,000 KM on the tachograph.

Think it is because they have to heat a big chunk of iron so that the
fuel will ignite. Gasoline cars just need a spark, no heating.
