Alan, Synergy allows you to seamlessly move the mouse/across multiple physical screens instead of having a separate screen/keyboard/mouse per screen.
You can get the same functionality with VNC but 1. Its slower - Synergy does not degrade the speed 2. You don’t have to bother about windows within windows. If you try it you'll see the advantages over VNC straight away, but there is a place for both solutions.
