Derek,

>Is this guy terribly confused, or is this new news as of today? The
only thing I heard being 'shared sourced' was code built on top of
VFP, and not the core VFP itself.

Yes, the writer is terribly confused. The source code for what MS refers to
as "the core bits" -- the EXE -- will NOT be revealed. There are too many
trade secrets and key pieces of intellectual property contained therein and
Alan Griver (YAG) has been very clear in stating that it will not be opened
up.

What WILL be put into shared source is all the code in the Sedna add-on pack
to be released as a Microsoft-supported baseline release by the end of this
summer. This includes the My classes, the Vista toolkit, the new Upsizing
Wizard, the improvements to the Data Explorer, and more.

Combined with the EULA for VFP9 that allows everything in the XSource folder
to be modified as derivative works and posted for community use, plus all
the projects now in the VFPX site at CodePlex that extend VFP considerably,
we do have the opportunity to continue making VFP relevant for years into
the future.

But the core bits will not be under community control and we are still
dependent on Microsoft for any future upgrades to solve any
incompatibilities with future OSes. SP2 this summer will attempt to fix any
problems running VFP on Vista and it's our best, last shot at getting any
major problems solved, so report any Vista problems to Microsoft right away.

Once the VFP team is disbanded at the end of the summer, if any problems
arise that Product Support Services cannot find a workaround for, the VFP
email alias inside Microsoft will be alerted to the problem and Calvin or
others will possibly be able to address it. This would probably just be for
a future OS change that prevents VFP from running, if it happens while the
product is still under official support.
