As an avid gamer and videogame collector ( twenty three systems across
almost 30 years ) I'd like to chime in on this one :)

The money $ : As mentioned before, used games are the way to go. There are
also game rental services similar to netflix that can feed your gaming jones
and also save you a bundle. That being said, there are some games that are
100% worth buying new: Anything by Shigeru Miyamoto of nintendo ( Mario,
Starfox, Zelda and every almost other good Nintendo game ), anything by ID
software ( Nobody does 3D tech like ID ) and anything by Rare ( recently
bought by Microsoft, the jury is still out on how the acquisition will
impact their creativity). My poor wife has watched me drop almost $2000 on
the three new systems , games, and a jumbotron-like plasma TV in the past
six months... She's a good sport, no?

The PS3: I firmly believe the PS3 is going to be number 2 in this console
generation, second only to the Nintendo DS. The hardware is radically
different than what developers are used to and there will be a 2+ year
learning curve attached to it until you see the true power of the Cell
processors. Sony's hardware is by far the most powerful out there,
absolutely smoking everything else in the market. The high price ? Lack of
games? Momentary issues. In the meantime, I happily run my Yellowdog linux,
watch movies and play games on this beast and I've barely scratched the
surface.I bet I could run VFP on it if I tried :) BTW: My current favorite
system is the Wii. The graphics pale to everything else, most of the games
are bunk, but darn! It is sooo fun ! Kudos to the big N for daring to
innovate :)

It's the grandparents that front most of the bill. <g> I'm not sure if
we've ever paid full price for a GameCube game. Rhino (now GameStop) is our
$ saving stop. They buy and sell used games.

When our GameCube stopped playing the mini-DVD disks, after much cursing to
myself, I found a website on the Internet on how to tune the DVD laser
thingy in the deep dark bowels on the underside of the motherboard. Saved
me! Whew.
