Hi Steve, >From what I understand with the new artwork system (introduced in .107) not only can the art be layered (bezel, backdrop, overlay, etc.) and hi-res but "lamps" can also be set up. Like with Gorf where your "space rank" lights up. I was thinking that you could combine hi-res backglass art with the DMD displays and maybe have the lamps blinking behind it where appropriate. I know it would take a monumental effort to move to the latest source but it sure would be nice to look at. Please see my post here on the mameworld forum.

At the bottom is a grid showing games where hi-res art has been created and which games have lamps and/or LEDs set up. Thanks for the kind words Andrew - Glad you're enjoying those projects! They are a blast, and it's been great to be/have been a part of them. We've got a nice update to pinmame coming literally in a few days, though I don't see us moving to the latest source from MAME anytime soon. We are way behind versions at this point, and to bring the sources up to the latest code would take a tremendous amount of effort which nobody seems to have time nor desire to do. The biggest reason though, is probably lack of a compelling reason to go through all the pain to do it. :) Having not played with the new artwork features of MAME recently, how would you see that benefiting pinmame? (be specific) If I can get someone (or myself) excited about the idea, perhaps we could at least discuss moving to the latest source branch.
