Dr. N is correct that there is a precondition - humility. From the tone of his 
post I think he has sufficient humility so that when God speaks to him he 
will listen.

Most lifelong atheists that I have met have zero humility, or so close to zero 
that it may as well be zero. I mean, to believe, they would have to 
acknowledge that there is someone greater than they are and for most of them 
that isn't going to happen.
