Oh, dear. I can't begin to list the trouble I've gotten into from
follow Whil's advice ... :)

And vice versa <eg>

System, Administration, Services from the menu (or sudo
system-config-services for command-line types) will bring up a dialog
that controls what services run on startup. Find ntp, check the
checkbox to tell it to start on startup, click 'Save' on the toolbar
or menu, and click the start button to start it right away.
