The 2000 'beta' version DID contain VFP.
There was a concerted effort to remove it, as VFP V7 was coming out,
and the big question then was -
IF it stays IN that dot something architecture , then
the command window would be gone,
most of the data engine would have been removed,
the 'then' architects couldn't figure out how to stream
VFP p-code into the CLR and IL (at least in a timely fashion during the
coding timelines to build that dot Something product base).
All n all - MOSTLY BAD for an architecture re-engineering job to shoe-horn
VFP into the dotSomething architecture.
I'm glad it didn't get into the 'first RTM' - but
when it was still inside of the Beta, I had a MS DE
come out to a UG, give us the 'Dot Something' talk .
It was a big waste of time, but at least we got to see those
amazing PowerPoint Slides.
Most of the 'stuff' about taking VFP V7 out of that dot something
architecture can be found on the YouTee.
That concerted effort to remove it mostly came about as folk (myself
included) were trying to figure out HOW VFP would work in the CLR, and
WHAT would be left that met the CLR/IL standards.
There was also a small push to maintain 2 seperate products - i e - VFP 7
inside the dot something framework, and VFP 7 NOT in the dot something
framework.
You know, one of the big points on VFP is its backward compatibility with
previous versions - if it stayed inside of the dot something architecture
, it would totally lose that backward compatibility.
No one wanted that, at least the major proponents on the YouTee.
The version o VFP 7 thrown into that Beta in 2000 was NOT changed to work
IN the CLR.
Warmest Regards [Bill]
PS - as to 'that article re: Phone Booth' - I'm writing up a longish reply
tonight - perhaps the author can use it later.
