Standard Oil, er, Standard Oil of New Jersey, er, Exxon, er, Exxon-Mobil has been one of the two or three largest companies on the planet for nearly 100 years. Two world wars. The Great Depression. Numerous smaller wars. All sorts of messes in the Middle East. One president who lied, got caught and resigned (Nixon), two other presidents who just lied all the time (LBJ, Clinton), another president who did what his wife told him to do (FDR). Exxon even weathered disco and Nehru jackets. And they're still the biggest, richest, most powerful company on the planet. MSFT has been the biggest software company for.... 10 years? 15 years? They're a one-trick pony, and that pony is getting long in the tooth. They only reason no one has taken it out back and shot it is because too many people still don't see that it's not wearing any clothes. (Oooo, two days in a row with unutterably-obscure mixed metaphors!) Ten years and they'll be the punch line to jokes just like Computer Associates is now. People will be pulling out their XBoxes to show off how nostalgic they are. I explained to the kids why we don't use Windows on our computers today in two sentences that made them go "Oh.
