Just a reality check... How much memory, disk speed and what OS was on your previous machine? How much memory and what's the disk speed on the new vista machine?
Did you turn off that egregious nagging crap? If you were running XP in 256Mbytes and now you're using 1Gbyte (or preferably 2Gig) memory...yeah, you'd notice an improvement. On the other hand, if you were running XP pro on a machine with 512mBytes and now have a 1Gig with vista -- the vista machine would run slower, as mine does.
