My kids are on virgin (they have to buy their own minutes out of their
allowance) and I'm considering switching over when my current contract
expires. For a low volume user VM prepay is probably your cheapest
alternative; as long as you buy the $20 worth of minutes every 90 days
your unused minutes will roll over.

They use the Sprint network, so the coverage is as good or bad as
Sprint's is for your area. Here in Colorado, the urban areas are well
covered but the rural coverage isn't anywhere near as good as
Verizon's.

The phones are pretty cheap, I saw a $10 one at Radio Shack, but the
selection is fairly limited and there's no bluetooth or fancy
smartphones. If you use your phone enough to want these features the
prepay probably wouldn't be economical anyway.
