A knife, properly thrown by someone that has a strong throwing arm,  has 
plenty of thrust.  Much like an arrow which can easily penetrate a sand 
bag that would stop most bullets.  The arrow and knife have more mass 
than most bullets, and the mass  is focuses on a small area of the knife 
point with plenty of weight behind the point driving it into the target, 
and with proper skill, a knife can be throw very accurately at close range.
