A knife, properly thrown by someone that has a strong throwing arm, has plenty of thrust. Much like an arrow which can easily penetrate a sand bag that would stop most bullets. The arrow and knife have more mass than most bullets, and the mass is focuses on a small area of the knife point with plenty of weight behind the point driving it into the target, and with proper skill, a knife can be throw very accurately at close range.
