Right, "The War on Terror" is not a real war. Terrorist who commit acts of terror are criminals, because committing acts of terror is a crime in just about everyones criminal justice book. Fighting terrorism as a war makes about as much sense as declaring "The War on Crime" and then using the military to fight crime. The military fights war based on the laws, tools, and mind set for conducting war, but the Criminal Justice System has a complete different set of rules and law to fight crime, that are more adaptive to preventing crime and bring to justice those that commit crimes. Therefore, fighting a war and fighting crime require two completely different set of laws, tools, and attitudes.
How would you like the military kicking in the doors of every household in your city to search for anything illegal, or shooting anything that make a sudden move, or arrest anyone that looks suspicious, etc. The military should only be used to fight wars where the enemy has been clearly defined such as the enemy being massed within the border of a country, or united under a common flag, or the enemy is otherwise clearly defined as a member of an opposing army. When the enemy are a few extremist criminal that commit act of terror or conspire to commit acts of terror, then a more delicate tool is needed like law enforcement, CIA, FBI, NSA, The Criminal Justice System, and perhaps a small band of elite special forces. The invasion of Iraq to destroy Saddam and his Army could qualify as an illegal war; since, congress never authorized a declaration of war against IRAQ, but the US won that war in a few days. What has gone on since that war was won is an effort to established an American backed regime that could rule Iraq and maintain the peace, be more pro Israel, and be more open to US involvement in Iraq's Oil exploration, development, and exports, and benefit wealthy GOP industrialist that have ties to the military (eg The Military Industrial Complex), with generous military contracts to make them even more wealthy.
