If the file is open, it's open.
Something else is keeping it open.

Could be the AV pgm, could be something else.
To find out for sure -
use
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/FileAndDisk/Filemon.mspx

Make a log filter SOLELY on that directory where the data is stored,
run it overnight, study the logs. If you don't filter, the log file is huge.
