I remember seeing him on TV as a kid and just thinking that he was  
funny in an off-beat sort of manner. It wasn't until I was a little  
older that I realized that he was either gay or pretending to be, and  
remember being amazed that this was permitted on TV! Remember, this  
was a good quarter-century before shows like Will & Grace and Queer  
Eye were commonplace.

        Anyways, reading his obit, it turns out he was a lot more than just  
a game-show cut-up. He won a Tony as an actor, and was nominated as a  
director.
