This has been observed in rocks from various parts of the world in
which magnetic crystals abruptly reverse direction. Normally they
align with the Earth's magnetic field, so the only explanation that
would take into account this on a global basis is that the polarity
of the magnetic field flipped.
Given the fact that magnetic field is due to the Earth's largely
iron core, and that due to the high heat in the center of the Earth
things are more or less liquid in nature, it is not implausible that
this would happen.
