The degree to which AIPAC influences American foreign policy and our information supply is described in detail by Mearsheimer and Walt in a paper called "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy" http://ksgnotes1.harvard.edu/Research/wpaper.nsf/rwp/RWP06-011 In an interview following publication of their work: MJ: That was for fear of a backlash? JM: Yes, I understood that the piece would create a firestorm that no one person would be able to withstand. You would need two scholars with big reputations to stand up to the withering criticism that would be aimed at the article and especially the authors. For that reason I told the Atlantic that I would first have to ask Steve if he would be willing to do it with me, and if he said yes, we could write the piece together. But if he wasn't willing to do it, I wouldn't be willing to do it alone. --------- I'm not blaming AIPAC alone for the tragedy exploding in the ME. I do believe they are in bed with other Big Money interests, notably oil and the military machine, but it was AIPAC that led the charge, supplying the fanaticism, the arguments, the excuses, the big media access, and, most importantly, the BIG lies. That invasion wasn't about mistakes or miscalculations, it was about us being suckered us into something most of us didn't want. The primary objective has been to seize authority in the ME, because that would solve Israel's security problems, and it would also make some interests very, very wealthy along the way. Only recently are we starting to see a dribble of reports explaining the latest "new" strategy, that we're in it for the long haul (decades, generations), as if nobody noticed the permanent "green zone" and other bases being built from day 1. Lies! The point of all this, and the angst I feel over it, is that I've always strongly believed that America belongs to it's people, but this debacle proves beyond any doubt how completely untrue that belief has been. Now I can accept having been a little naïve along the way about who runs the show, but this is just so outrageous that it's hard to believe - except it's actually happening! No matter which objective standard we measure that invasion by, it made no sense. History shows very clearly that western occupiers have never, and will never, control the ME. They are a billion+ strong! The only real explanation was fanaticism. Do you or I feel a fanatical need to control the ME? I certainly don't, and I betcha the great majority of Americans (now) feel this way. Why, then, are we still there - still pursuing that mission, and now accepting that it will last for generations? How is that possible? Could this be due to AIPAC's influence? That's what I think. And what of our unquestioned support for Israel? The very idea of a religious state is contrary to American philosophy. Then look at the vast amounts of our tax money and weapons being given to Israel, and seeing how it's being used, it just revolting. Then came this war. When do we say "enough"? Or, is the question really "HOW do we say enough?
