The first apps I licensed with my first PC (IBM PC, 256k RAM, cga color
monitor, 1200b Hayes internal modem, kick ass back then) included dBase III,
Borland TurboPascal and Borland Sidekick. I had a copy of Wordstar and
SuperCalc given to me, before I knew anything about "propiratary" (sic)
software, and licensing requirements. Once I learned about the license game
I purchased license for the apps I was using (Borland Sprint word processor
and Borland Quattro Pro spreadsheet), and made a decision to never accept
"free" software unless it was truly freeware.

I was initially innocent of willful wrongdoing in my early days of software
use without license, as nobody had ever explained the concept of licensing
software to me. After I took the time to read the dBase III Plus (I
purchased that license also) license agreement, and saw I only bought
license to use, I dug a bit and realized the mistake I had made in using
copies of Wordstar and SuperCalc. I ended up licensing WordStar Pro (which
really sucked, and replaced with Sprint), but SuperCalc was no longer on the
market as the founder (Sorcim?) had been killed in a plane crash, hence no
company to pay license to any longer. I have since then tried to make up
for my early days of an evil-doer by properly licensing, and in some cases
overlicensing, any fee based software I use.

Ah, the memories...
