If your calculation settings are set for automatic, not manual, then I can't tell what is going on. I checked this in version 2003, not 2002, so I don't know if that "Tools/Options/" option is there for the 2002 version. In the 2003 version the behavior is exactly what you experience in your version. I hope this helps.
