Maybe it is because I only do straight forward things in Excel, but office
automation has been a large part of almost every application I've ever
worked on.  I would like to also say that _Microsoft Office Automation with
Visual FoxPro_ by Granor and Martin is without any reservation whatsoever
the very best book ever written on the subject.  Graham.
