My standard list of files for exclusion are .dbf, .idx, .cdx, and .fpt.
With both Norton and Symantec (corporate) AntiVirus it makes a tremendous
difference in performance. Also, with the Symantec Corporate AntiVirus
solution I set it to not scan any files on mapped/network connected
drives/files. I leave it to each machine to scan its own local files,
whether called by a local process or from a network connected machine.
There are some other Tricks Of The Trade I use as well. For more info feel
free to connect as an "anonymous" user to my ftp Server at:
gilhale.dnsalias.com (browser address is ftp://gilhale.dnsalias.com), then
navigate to the directory named:

 "\Software\SymantecAntiVirusSetup_Corporate_v-10Plus"

In that directory are several Word .doc files. The one covering my
configuration suggestions is named:

 "v10.0.0 Part 2 upgrade to v-10.0.1 steps.doc" (I use slightly altered with
later versions of SAV, but the approach is the same).

You are welcome to download any of the documents in that directory, but this
is the one I feel will be most useful when it comes to performance related
matters. Even if you use a different AntiVirus solution than SAV, there may
be some useful tidbits here and there to make them worth the read. Be
certain to not connect in ftp Passive Mode, as that results in real slow
connections and downloads.

Ciao!

Gil
