Did he say "You do computers, don't you.  You should be able to fix this 
easy problem in no time"?
I've got a mate that I do some computer stuff for.  At least he pays me 
in wine :-)

Things to check:
- Go into the bios yourself to check the internal sound is still disabled.
- Put the card in another machine to make sure it works.
- Uninstall the web cam to see if it makes any difference.
