I don't understand boomer generation. After all, one of the hazard's facing their beloved Social Security system, to which they feel manifestly destined and entitled by that pesky God that doesn't exist, is the huge shortage of workers to fund it once they all quit and move to Florida. You'd figure on strictly utilitarian grounds they'd want to ban abortions. But apparently they fear commitment and parenthood more than they fear flipping burgers at age 70 just to pay the rent. It's the same thing with trade and economics. You'd figure they would want more of their fellow Americans working gainfully rather than living on the welfare dole, since the latter is a drag on their income. But they want their cheap cars and electrical gadgets more than they want a balanced budget and national sovereignty, to fight a losing battle against long-term climatology and geological inevitabilities rather than enjoy the blessings of liberty today and secure them for their kids, however fashionable it may be at the moment to blame George Bush for 94 years of profligate spending and irresponsible tax policy (I'm referring to the income tax itself, which again---they feel entitled to most of Somebody Else's Income more than they feel threatened by a nanny state). Go figure... And by the way I don't mean this in a partisan way. The boomers of which I speak are frankly just as likely to be Republicans and Democrats and Libertarians. The ostensible Republicans rail about the welfare state but vote for it on that great big credit card in the sky every chance they get. The ostensible Democrats raise a stink about social consciousness but are the biggest polluters and frauds when it comes to individual compassion you'll ever meet. It's always someone else who isn't compassionate enough, and to solve this they invariably recommend new costly, intractable, unmanageable bureaucracies. Ostensible Libertarians... well all they ever do is try to convince you to vote for Ron Paul, who is a certifiable lunatic like most of the fringe candidates. Cognitive dissonance is a characteristic they all share. I'm getting grumpy in my middle-age. I think I was born in the wrong century, quite possibly on the wrong planet. But, having been dumped on the wrong planet, I am glad that at least the aliens had the courtesy to plant me in the one country in the world where it is possible to list off everything that is wrong and still live pretty damn well, generally without the fear of starvation, or having my hands or head lobbed off, or 95% of my income fleeced by incompetent government (as opposed to a relatively modest 33% or so).
