Dear Liberal Drinkers - We just celebrated the 4th of July and the birth of our nation. It's perfect timing to share with you the news that our organization -- Drinking Liberally -- is growing up as well.
After four years of national expansion, fueled by the volunteer energy of local coordinators and national leaders, Living Liberally -- umbrella organization of the 200+ chapters of Drinking Liberally social clubs, Laughing Liberally comedy shows, Screening Liberally film outings, Eating Liberally meals and Reading Liberally book tours -- has hired its first Executive Director. Justin Krebs, a political advocate, entrepreneur, organizer and a founder of Living Liberally, began this new role last month as part of the organization's effort to transform into a stronger, self- sustaining partner to the progressive movement in time for the political season of 2008. Joining Justin is Josh Bolotsky as National Program Associate. Bolotsky, former President of the College Dems of New York State, is part of the Leadership Academy of Young People For, which places recent college graduates in paid fellowships with progressive groups. Also, Seth Pearce, a founder of the New York City Students Union, has come on board for the summer. The fulltime staff is going to be able to better support all of our chapters and our members; we're already making it easier to start Screening, Reading and Eating Liberally clubs (we're not just drinking anymore...but we're not going to stop drinking either); we're working to attract great authors to tour DL chapters; and we're becoming more reliable partners to other great progressive groups -- including organizations that have helped support us, like Young People For, Working Assets, Media Matters, BlogPAC, Advomatic, YearlyKos, SEIU, Alternet and the Center for Independent Media. We're also increasing our presence online. LivingLiberally.org now features a blog, and - OpenLeft.com -- the new site on progressive strategy and infrastructure - has just launched with daily features from Living Liberally...many of which are based on stories we hear from all of you. A new, integrated Living Liberally site is on its way. So check out livingliberally.org and openleft.com and tell us stories from the bars (and outside the bars) across the country by writing your anecdotes to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Finally, we are proud of our first publication: Liberal Mixology, a guide to the drinks of democracy, produced by the Des Moines chapter from submissions received from all of you. You can still get your copy -- only $15 (that includes shipping) -- at drinkingliberally.org/ store/mixology.html -- order today! New staff, new blogs, new books...there's always something new with Living Liberally. But don't take our word for it -- visit your local Drinking Liberally chapter and see for yourself. Or start your own chapter of Drinking, Screening, Reading and Eating Liberally chapters today...the first step is responding to this email.
