I have found that when properly tuned SAV is an excellent AV solution. I have it running at quite a few client locations, with as few as 15 PCs running my VFP apps on their Server over a LAN, to as many as 200+ PCs on a LAN with no less than 50 consurrent users hitting my VFP tables all day long. I found the trick is to understand what the various options (v-10.0+) do, and how to tweak them and push the changes out to the remaining Managed PCs. When SAV v-10.0 first came out it was defaulted to an overly aggressive series of scans and settings that killed performance. That version got a real bad rap due to the overly aggressive "protection" provided. Before Symantec had a chance to "correct" their initial default settings I learned how to tune that initial version (largely thanks to their Tech Support Reps, who gladly helped me work through the quagmire), and get it running very nicely (yes, with VFP Server based data and large tables). Then SAV v-10.0.1 came out, which only changed the default values to match most of what I had already learned to reconfigure. Subsequent versions have had varying degrees of default performance issues. The latest version I have running on my own system (4 Servers, 10 PCs) is v-10.1.5.5000. Seems to be running just fine, consistent auto-updates, central management is humming right along, etc. And performance with SAV is snappy. The times I have found SAV to slow systems down are more than I care to see. But in all cases, tuning them as described in the document I referred Al to earlier today has always done the trick (copy below). Gil --------------------------------------- Make certain the Symantec AntiVirus is set up as indicated in my documentation located at: gilhale.dnsalias.com (Log on as an anonymous user, and turn off Passive Mode) Log on anonymously (use ftp://gilhale.dnslais.com if you are using Internet Explorer or other browser). Navigate to: \SymantecAntiVirusInstallationDocumentation Download the .Zip file for all documents. The one you want to read is "v10.0.0 Part 2 upgrade to v-10.0.1 steps.doc", which has the configurations I find work best with networks, and with VFP related files. eMail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you run into any ftp connectivity or download problems. -------------------------------------- > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Brian Abbott > Sent: Monday, July 30, 2007 11:39 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: Network problems > > > Has the AV been explicitly told to ignore .dbf.cdx/fpt files in the data > folder? > > Symantec AV sucks, I've had issues with that before ... > > Al wrote: > > Hi gang > > Still having problems with cdx files going missing and things > not working to > > plan.
