Cron will run a script on bootup if you use the @reboot time specifier. This can be a lot simpler than monkeying around with initscripts as long as cron starts at an appropriate time for your script. man 5 crontab for details (Don't forget the '5', man crontab tells you about the crontab program, man 5 crontab tells you about the file structure.)
