Python, Python, Python.... Oh, wait a minute, we LIKE Python, huh? I am still a way from digging into Python and Dabo, as these other projects are still in process. But I will still be required to remain in the World of Windows as that is where my target market is based. But, I am starting to look at using Web Server connectivity with Linux as an alternative to a local Server. A colleague and I are about to light up a Java/PostgreSQL based app that is designed to replace one of my VFP based apps that has been around and running well for the past 5 years. I am excited about the possibilities, although it is like saying goodbye to a dear friend. But with scalability beyond a 2Gb file limit, built in database security and thin-net performance constraints with VFP I had little choice but look down a different path. I think Dabo would have been a great tool to use for the front end, but the requests from current clients was for a browser based solution (it runs with IE versions 5 - 7, and FireFox) as opposed to a VFP or similar front end. Details later as we see how it runs in the Real World. Initially we are going to run it against a Windows Server for PostgreSQL, but in a while we are going to move to a Linux Server platform for the PostgreSQL database. I have yet another, far more complex VFP app we need to migrate to PostgreSQL at some point. Thus far we are not decided on a browser front end (I am opposed to using a browser in this case), a VFP/Dabo front end, or both. We will not engage that project until some time in early 2008. I would like to go the Dabo route with PostgreSQL, but we will see how the browser interface we are about to release goes with clients who are so used to using my current VFP front ends. Oh, the purpose this eMail? Just to let Ed know how very much his insights have been in bringing forth info re: Python, and his Dabo efforts. It will take me a while to get there, but I am working in that direction.
