Michael,

The author is mixing apples and oranges and misses the main point; Access
makes an excellent front end tool for SQL Server and a variety of other
RDBMS. Also, until 2007, you had a native interface to SQL Server built-in
(most developers I know have virtually ignored 2007). Even without that
interface, you can still connect to almost any backend using ODBC or OLEDB,
which makes it easy to do heterogeneous joins across different back ends.
And it wasn't until the current version of SQL and VS that you had some
tools comparable to what you'd find in Access.

As far as the use of JET as a database engine and why one might continue
to use it is the fact that modifications have been made to give some very
tight integration with Share Point Services, which don't exist in SQL
Server. Plans are also being made to extend the JET engine (it is now in
the control of the Office team).

I would agree that for the typical desktop application, the use of SQL
Server 2005 Express is almost a given over a JET database, but it still
means some additional overhead (ie. separate backup cycle) and using it
certainly doesn't preclude the use of Access as a front end.

I see no reason in the world to get rid of it. Heck, you could make the
same argument with VFP and DBF's for that matter.

Jim.

Good article posted by Carl on VFUG. Die Access Die!

The guy makes some good points...why not just use SQL Server instead of
Access, especially since the Express version is free anyway and provides
an easier migration path??
